Ebook About A quaint English village is home to a murderer in the Macavity Award-wining mystery series debut that launched the British crime drama Midsomer Murders.Badger’s Drift is the ideal English village, complete with vicar, bumbling local doctor, and kindly spinster. But when the spinster dies suddenly, her best friend kicks up a fuss loud enough to attract the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby. And when Barnaby and his eager-beaver deputy start poking around, they uncover a swamp of ugly scandals and long-suppressed resentments seething below the picture-postcard prettiness. In the grand English tradition of the quietly intelligent copper, Barnaby has both an irresistibly dry sense of humor and a keen insight into what makes people tick. The Killings at Badger’s Drift marks Inspector Barnaby’s debut, and offers ample proof that Caroline Graham may indeed be “simply the best detective writer since Agatha Christie” (Sunday Times of London).“Murder most pleasing . . . a corking good mystery.” —Los Angeles TimesBook The Killings at Badger's Drift (Inspector Barnaby Mysteries Book 1) Review :
I first became aware of this writer through the series, Midsomer Murders, which I loved. Her detective novels were the basis for the series. In fact, this book was the genesis for the very first episode in the series. So, I looked forward to reading the book. This book is the debut of a number of murder mysteries featuring one very intelligent detective with an astute understanding of human nature, and a wickedly dry sense of humor. I loved this well-written, engaging book and look forward to reading the others. The book centers around Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, who investigates murder cases in a cluster of small English villages in his jurisdiction. Here, accompanied by his sidekick, Sergeant Troy, he investigates the death of an elderly, retired teacher in the quintessential English village of Badger’s Drift. It seems that a friend of the deceased is convinced that the death is not a natural one.The investigation quickly ascertains that the death was, in fact, a murder. The question is who would snuff out the life of so blameless a soul? Well, as the investigation continues, dark undercurrents and rot surfaces in the charming village of Badger’s Drift. Things are not always as they seem. While Detective Chief Investigator Barnaby investigates, more murders come to light, and what he discovers shocks the conscience. The way I can tell a "great" book is if I put it on my shelf and know that I will want to read it again sometime and immediately order all the other books in the series. So, THIS is not a great book. It's a good book. Well written, moves along at a good pace, fairly interesting main character, annoying second main character (assistant detective), more than one murder. However, I did figure out the guilty parties before the "reveal" because there was simply nobody else left and I did pick up on the subtle hints given along the way. I have the 2nd book in the series and hope that, as often happens, the author improves as they write more books. But, trust me, this is not Agatha Christie and Insp. Barnaby is no Insp. Morse so don't set your hopes too high. But, I do recommend it. It is way far and above the usual crap being published as "cozy" mysteries now. This is a good read, just not perhaps worthy of a second read.
